Everything about postpartum doula services, costs, what to expect, and how it works in Nashville.
Costs & payment
How much does a postpartum doula cost in Nashville?
Postpartum doula services in Nashville typically range from $200–300 per visit depending on package size. My packages start at $2,000, every package works out to $200 per 4-hour visit, and payment plans are available. Many families use FSA/HSA funds or submit for insurance reimbursement.
Cost factors include visit count, specialized needs (like multiples), and travel distance beyond 30 minutes from BNA.
Is postpartum doula care worth the cost?
Consider what families typically spend: a fancy stroller runs $800–1,500, a designer crib $600–1,200. Research shows postpartum doula support reduces postpartum depression rates, increases breastfeeding success, improves partner relationships, and builds parenting confidence — and those skills last through every child you have. My families consistently say it was the best money they spent on anything baby-related.
Can I use insurance, FSA, or HSA?
FSA/HSA funds almost always cover postpartum doula services — check with your plan administrator. Some insurance plans reimburse doula care, especially with a prescription from your OB or midwife; I provide detailed receipts and superbills with proper coding, plus a letter of medical necessity if needed. Note that TennCare/Medicaid does not currently cover postpartum doula services in Tennessee.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yes — interest-free payment plans on all packages. The typical arrangement is 50% at booking and 50% before services begin, or we can split the total into three monthly payments. No interest, no fees.
Services & scope
What does a postpartum doula actually do?
A postpartum doula provides physical, emotional, and educational support for the whole family. I’m not a baby nurse who takes over — I’m an educator who teaches you to care for your baby while supporting your recovery. That includes newborn care education, feeding support for all methods, recovery guidance, light household help, sibling support, and connections to trusted Nashville professionals.
What's the difference between a postpartum doula and a baby nurse?
A doula educates and empowers — I teach you how to care for your baby, support your whole family, and aim for you to feel confident when services end. Baby nurses typically take over infant care with less teaching, and night nannies handle overnight care only. If you want to learn and feel capable, a postpartum doula is the right fit.
Do you support all feeding methods?
Yes — breastfeeding, formula, exclusive pumping, combination, and donor milk, all supported 100% without judgment. I’ll never pressure you toward any method or shame your choice. I support your goals, educate on options, troubleshoot challenges, and refer to IBCLCs when needed.
Can you help with breastfeeding problems?
Within my scope as a doula: positioning and latch help, teaching different holds, identifying common problems, and education on normal patterns versus concerns. I’m not a lactation consultant — for complex issues like tongue ties, severe pain, or low supply, I’ll connect you quickly with excellent Nashville IBCLCs.
Will you clean my house?
I provide essential household support, not professional cleaning. I will do dishes, kitchen cleanup, baby laundry, bottle and pump-part washing, light tidying, simple meal prep, and high-traffic vacuuming. I won’t deep clean, scrub bathrooms, or take on major organizing projects. The everyday tasks are what pile up postpartum — getting them handled means you can rest.
Do you provide overnight care?
No, overnight care isn’t a service I provide — but I’m happy to share guidance and trusted resources to help with sleep.
What if I have older children?
Supporting siblings is part of my service: playing, reading, watching them during appointments, teaching gentle touch with baby, and giving you one-on-one time with your older kids. The goal is helping your whole family adjust smoothly.
Bookings & scheduling
When should I hire a postpartum doula?
Most Nashville families book during the third trimester (32–36 weeks) to guarantee availability around their due date — I typically fill up 6–8 weeks in advance, especially in spring and summer. Already postpartum? I accept bookings at any point, whether baby is 2 days or 2 months old, and I often have flexibility for families in crisis. Text me to check current availability.
Do I need to schedule all visits in advance?
No — flexibility is key with newborns. We’ll set a general timeframe, schedule the first visit or two, and play the rest by ear. Some families want structured weekly visits; others prefer spontaneous “I need help today” texts. Both work.
What if baby comes early or late?
We adjust — babies rarely arrive on schedule. Your package flexes around the actual birth date with no penalty. Just text me when baby arrives and we’ll coordinate.
What's your cancellation policy?
48-hour notice preferred for rescheduling individual visits, with emergencies and illness exempt — if you or baby are sick, we reschedule, no penalty. Unused visits can be rescheduled within your package timeframe.
Do you serve my area?
I serve Greater Nashville within roughly 30 minutes of BNA — all Nashville neighborhoods plus Brentwood, Franklin, Mt. Juliet, Hermitage, Hendersonville, Goodlettsville, and parts of Sumner, Williamson, and Wilson Counties. A $20 travel fee applies beyond 30 minutes. Not sure? Share your zip code at your consultation and I’ll confirm. Your birth hospital doesn’t matter — I meet you at home.
Consultations
Is the consultation really free?
Yes — completely free, no strings attached. It’s a chance for us to get to know each other and see if we’re a good fit. You don’t need to be pregnant to schedule one; I work with families at any point postpartum.
Will you pressure me to book?
Never. I want you to feel confident in your choice. If I’m not the right fit, or doula support isn’t what you need, I’ll tell you honestly — and I can refer you to other Nashville doulas.
Can my partner or family join?
Absolutely — I encourage it, both for consultations and visits. Partners can learn infant care alongside you, practice techniques with coaching, and take breaks while I’m there. Many partners say learning from a doula made them feel capable instead of in the way.
How do I know if we're a good fit?
That’s what the consultation is for. We’ll talk through your needs, you’ll get a sense of my approach, and I’ll be honest if someone else would suit you better. Trust your gut — the doula relationship requires it, and if it doesn’t feel right, that’s okay.
Your home & comfort
I'm nervous about having someone in my home postpartum. Is that normal?
Completely normal. “My house will be messy” — I expect messy; that’s why you need support. “I’ll be in pajamas” — perfect, you should be comfortable. “It feels vulnerable” — it is, which is why we meet before services start. Most families say it feels comfortable within two visits.
Will you judge my parenting choices?
Never. I support all feeding methods, sleep approaches (safe sleep is my only requirement), parenting philosophies, family structures, and cultural practices. The only time I’ll speak up is if something is unsafe — and even then, I’ll educate gently, never shame.
What if I cry during your visit?
Go for it. Postpartum hormones are real and intense. I’ve held many crying mamas — it’s part of the job, and part of healing. Emotional support is just as important as physical support.
Is everything confidential?
Absolutely. Your birth story, your home, your struggles, your choices, your health information — all of it stays between us. The only exceptions are those legally required: suspected child abuse or neglect, or threats of harm.
Inclusive care
Do you support LGBTQ+ families?
Yes — all families are welcome and celebrated. I provide inclusive language, support for all family structures, respect for your chosen terminology, and connections to LGBTQ+-friendly Nashville providers.
I'm a single parent. Can you still help?
Absolutely — single parents often need more support, not less. I bring extra emotional support, help building your network, flexibility for your situation, and zero assumptions about “partner help.” You’re not alone in this.
Do you work with adoptive families?
Yes. I support bonding and attachment, feeding (formula, bottle, or attempting breastfeeding), newborn care education, and the unique emotional aspects of adoption.
My baby has special needs. Can you help?
I have personal and professional experience with developmental differences, medical complexity, feeding challenges, sensory processing, and neurodivergence. I provide non-judgmental support, help navigating systems, connections to Nashville specialists, and emotional support for the journey.
